We have been keeping chickens and enjoying their eggs and antics around the garden for over 20 years but over the last few have fallen for the rare heritage breeds available in New Zealand. Our interest began with a group of Lavender Araucana’s and has quickly expanded to other breeds.
John and Karyn are both from the Waikato. John, dubbed the mad chicken man by our children, looks after the chickens whilst Karyn owns and manages Tall Poppies Landscape and Pool Centre and helps at night and in the weekends. We also run sheep and a couple of cattle on a small lifestyle block 10 minutes out of Te Awamutu.
John formerly worked as an electronics technician and later manager, repairing consumer electronics, scientific environmental monitoring equipment, and more recently dairy farm automation equipment. A recent redundancy forcing serious thought to the future, and creating the opportunity to turn a passion into a business, hence setting up Feathered Friends. Also being a keen photographer all photo’s on this website are of our birds and been taken by John.
Like a lot of others when we began our journey into heritage breeds we brought a few cheap birds of dubious heritage off the internet and learned the hard way they are not always great performers and often bought in parasites or illnesses to spread to the rest of the flock.
Here at Feathered Friends we keep a quality selection of rare heritage breed poultry, both light and heavy, and doing our best to preserve our heirloom breeds in danger of being lost due to the more commonly available commercial hybrids. We are also members of New Zealand Rare Breeds Conservation Society
Animal welfare is important to us and all our chickens free range on rotation and have large outdoor enclosures and warm dry coups when not. We recommend and use diatomaceous earth as a non-toxic alternative to control parasites and all our birds get wormed regularly so you can rest easy you won’t be bringing anything nasty home to the rest of your flock. All the birds are used to dogs and cats with regular exposure to both.
Set up with incubators and hatchery we set eggs weekly and sell the resultant, chicks, pullets, cockerels and hatching eggs, we plan to add more variety as we source quality birds over time.
We also supply chicken food and accessories, and shortly plan to add chicken coops so you can get everything you need in one place.
We look forward to meeting you and assisting in choosing birds, setting up, supplying other needs but please make sure you book a time rather than just turning up.
John and Karyn.
